In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there is a sequence of nine volcanic islands at the intersection of the Eurasian, African and North American tectonic plates. The sunny Azores archipelago is a pioneer in sustainable tourism and boasts a strong outdoor culture.

A paradise to discover
For nature lovers, the island of São Miguel is a huge botanical playground. There are viewpoints with manicured gardens spread across the coastal regions. Pink and blue hydrangeas surround cow pastures and decorate the shores of volcanic crater lakes.
In the densely vegetated gorges of the northeast region, canyoners can choose between abseiling or jumping from cliffs with waterfalls into deep pools of water that form further down. Birdwatchers also flock to the region to see the Azorean bullfinch, a critically endangered bird and one of the rarest in Europe, found only in the laurel forests of the northeast.
